“Asclepieion of Epidaurus:

a timeless journey to health”

(The theater and entertainment as means of the healing process)

EPIDAVROS 0005-Front

In ancient times the sanctuary of Asclepius was an organized medical – treatment center that signaled the transition from magic to real medicine, namely the healing of any disease by diagnosing and implementing tailor-made treatment or surgery, which was believed to be guided by God.

In our continuous efforts to enrich our  knowledge of the Ancient Greek history and culture, and offer you the very best we are proud and honoured to announce our cooperation with Diazoma, one of the most prestigious organizations dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of Ancient Greek Theatres.

A few words about Diazoma from its founder S. Benos:

diazoma…”At once I found myself surrounded by an enthusiastic and dynamic group of people, which widened in the blink of an eye. All of them, ‘as one long prepared…’ Scholars, intellectuals, artists, people in local government and pro-active citizens embraced ‘DIAZOMA’. Fellow-citizens who have decided that the research, study, protection, enhancement and, wherever feasible, the use of ancient theatres and other venues for spectators and listeners, such as ancient odeia and stadia, are also their concern. And they are resolved to take these monuments’ fortunes into their own hands, to work together dynamically, as helpers of the State and the services responsible, in the major task of including ancient theatres in modern life”.

…”And it is my hope that ‘DIAZOMA’ will be an Association that expresses a new way of thinking, of dealing with and managing affairs that concern us all. An Association that mobilizes both Citizens and State”

– The theater and entertainment in general as means of treating mental illness

– Water as a means of ritual cleansing of the soul and healing element.

 – Diet as a means of healing.

– Sleeping and dreams as elements of treatment.

– The use of medicines

– Interventional

– surgical medicine.

– Healing and Miracle.

– The practice of sports as an element of conservation and restoration of health.

A visit at Spyros Vassiliou’s Atelier/House

We are starting a new series of visits to small – mostly unknown – Museums, art galleries, exhibitions and workshops. Let’s meet:

Little Hidden Gems in Athens

***
Spyros Vassiliou (1903-1985) was a Greek painter, printmaker, illustrator, and stage designer. He became widely recognized for his work starting in the 1930s, when he received the Benaki Prize from the Athens Academy. The recipient of a Guggenheim Prize for Greece (in 1960), Spyros Vassiliou’s works have been exhibited in galleries throughout Europe, in the United States, and Canada.
Spyros Vassiliou became recognized as a painter of the transformation of the modern urban environment, depicting with an unwavering eye the sprawl of urban development that surrounded his home in Athens, under the walls of the Parthenon. His artistic identity combined monochrome backgrounds and the unorthodox positioning of objects. He paid homage to the Byzantine icon by floating symbols of everyday Greek life on washes of gold or sea-blue color, very much like the religious symbols that float on gold in religious art. With oils and watercolours he painted natural and urban space, portraits, still-life, and scenes of daily living, combining selective elements of cubism and impressionism. A member of an important community of Greek artists in the mid-20th century, Vassiliou was known as one of the first Greek pop-art painters.

“LITTLE HIDDEN GEMS in ATHENS” PART II

Our second “Little Hidden Gems in Athens” visit will amaze you ! When we visited this exhibition to prepare our visit, we were astounded ! We are going to be introduced into the world of “The inventions of the Ancient Greeks” an exhibition at Herakleidon Museum, 16 Herakleidon str. Thission.,

ACCESS by public transport/map

Some words about the exhibition from the museum’s website:
The exhibition “The amazing inventions of the ancient Greeks” presents functional models of some of the most extraordinary ancient Greek inventions, a selection of the exhibits of the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology Kostas Kotsanas that operates at Katakolon port and Ancient Olympia. These models were constructed after a long and extensive study of ancient Greek, Latin and Arabic literature, information from vase painting and the few relevant archaeological finds.

This exhibition aims to demonstrate that the technology of the ancient Greeks, just before the end of the ancient Greek world, was shockingly similar to the beginning of our modern technology. An important cultural initiative, which promotes Greece internationally as the foundation of Western civilization.

Please apply as soon as possible, because the size of the group is limited to 17 people
by the museum, as the exhibition rooms are quite small.
If there are more than 17 participants, we can form a second group, either the same day right after the first one (will begin approx. at 14:30), or on another date.
In your application email please inform us if you are coming to the taverna after the tour, because they have to know the number of people coming and fix a menu in advance, so all people could be served on time. (it’s a Saturday)

Our next guided tour: Ancient Agora, Stoa Attalou, and Thission

Dearest friends,

Now that the weather is (hopefully…) getting better,we are planning our next guided tour with our amazing guide Elli out in the open!
We are going to Ancient Agora*, Stoa Attalou**,and Thission on the 9/05.

*The Agora was the heart of ancient Athens, the focus of political, commercial, administrative and social activity, the religious and cultural centre, and the seat of justice.

The site was occupied without interruption in all periods of the city’s history. It was used as a residential and burial area as early as the Late Neolithic period (3000 B.C.). Early in the 6th century, in the time of Solon, the Agora became a public area.

The Museum of the Ancient Agora is organized in chronological and thematic units that reveal aspects of the public and private life in ancient Athens.

The earliest antiquities, potsherds, vases, terracotta figurines and weapons, dating from the Neolothic , Bronze Age, Iron Age and Geometric period, come from wells and tombs excavated in the area of the Athenian Agora and its environs.

**The Stoa of Attalos was a place for Athenians to meet, walk, and to do business. It was destroyed by the Heruli in A.D. 267, and its members were incorporated into the Late Roman Wall. The restoration, based on studies by the architect Yannis Travlos, was carried out in 1953-1956 by the American School of Classical Studies

Πόσα χρόνια έχετε να πάτε στο Αρχαιολογικό μουσείο ;

Greek Conversation and Culture group

Dearest friends,

We would like to announce a new, more flexible style that our conversation groups will have. We are aiming at groups with a limited and theme-centered context to meet the participants’ specific needs.

The groups will have a theme, i.e. SHOPPING, MOVING AROUND, GREETINGS AND SOCIAL LIFE etc.The participants will meet 3,4 times or until they’ve covered the specific language and in the end they will take part in a real-life activity,ie a visit to the local market, a shop, etc to practice what they’ve just learnt.

The participants will be able to join any group or groups they want, without, of course, any obligation to join all of them. The maximum number of people can be up to 5 or 6 and we can create groups in the North, South or centre of Athens.

For more advanced people, we are planning literature and culture groups that will study or prepare a theatre play, an art exhibition, an event and then watch it.

We hope that with these groups we will cover your needs and make your stay here easier and more enjoyable.

See you soon!
