Tribute to William Saroyan
Hellenic American Union |

Beginning with “Saroyan’s Fables” we inaugurate a series of cultural events devoted to the Armenian-American writer William Saroyan on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his death…

In cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Athens and the Hellenic-Armenian Studies Center, we are pleased to present “Saroyan’s Fables”, an event featuring a live narration of some of the stories in Saroyan’s collection of fables that he had heard his relatives recount when he was a boy. Hearing these tales in his native tongue forged a powerful bond between young Saroyan and the land of his ancestors. Saroyan’s fables are not an exact reproduction but an adaptation of these stories, written in the effort to protect them from oblivion.
Narrators: Nazik Aydinian, Haik Kassardjian, Hellen Kassesian and Laurence Menentian. Music by the oudists: Mugerdich Boghossian and Lefteris Havoutsas

William Saroyan (1908-1981) was born in Fresno, California to Armenian parents who immigrated in the USA at the end of the 19th century. Among his works which became known in Greece, is the short story collection My Name is Aram (1940), the Pulitzer prize winning play The Time of Your Life and The Human Comedy, which was adapted for cinema and won the Academy Award for Best Story in 1943. In his writing Saroyan often draws on his childhood memories and the experience of immigrants who have been uprooted from their native land. His works are autobiographical in nature and his characters often portray different sides of himself or his relatives.
