Greek Conversation and Culture group

Dearest friends,

We would like to announce a new, more flexible style that our conversation groups will have. We are aiming at groups with a limited and theme-centered context to meet the participants’ specific needs.

The groups will have a theme, i.e. SHOPPING, MOVING AROUND, GREETINGS AND SOCIAL LIFE etc.The participants will meet 3,4 times or until they’ve covered the specific language and in the end they will take part in a real-life activity,ie a visit to the local market, a shop, etc to practice what they’ve just learnt.

The participants will be able to join any group or groups they want, without, of course, any obligation to join all of them. The maximum number of people can be up to 5 or 6 and we can create groups in the North, South or centre of Athens.

For more advanced people, we are planning literature and culture groups that will study or prepare a theatre play, an art exhibition, an event and then watch it.

We hope that with these groups we will cover your needs and make your stay here easier and more enjoyable.

See you soon!

Share our dream !

Dearest friends and companions on this crazy and difficult trip!

Things are tough!
What a dark way of starting a message!
We were downtown the other day and our hearts broke at the sight of the centre.
Cinemas where we spent happy years and days, watching films that only they showed. Shops with owners and employees in total despair. Buildings that we were proud of, “ornaments” of the city, where we used to take foreign friends and visitors of ours and show them.
Everything covered in ashes and black smoke!
HOWEVER!
We cannot allow all that to bring us down!
We need to reclaim our city from a bunch of idiots and incompetent losers.
We want to try and revive our city. We want to do things in our city, breathe along with it, walk along its streets and have a coffee and a “koulouri” at places that belong to all of us, not them!
To achieve that, we need you as well.
Come with us.
Share our dream, feel the heartbeat of the city of Athena, once called “Diamond in the ring of the earth”..
Don’t be just visitors here, try to become inhabitants, locals.
When all this is over, you will be proud of having contibuted to the re-construction of a city, or even a country.
See you downtown and ……EFCHARISTOUME!
We will always be there to join you.

MELANCHOLY – ΜΕΛΑΓΧΟΛΙΑ

Dearest friends,

Today we are going to analyse a word that is very widely used these days, the word MELANCHOLY.
The word was borrowed by the Greek ΜΕΛΑΓΧΟΛΙΑ and is used in many languages, ie melancolie, Melancholie, etc.

Well, the word has an interesting background. It comes from MELAS(=black) and CHOLI(= bile) and it refers to someone deep in black bile, therefore glum, sad. The idea that the human feelings are related to a good balance of body fluids was very widespread in the antiquity.

Hippocrates taught that these fluids are: blood, bile, black bile and phlegm. Consequently, if the black bile prevails, you get the feeling of discontent, sorrow, ….something like the way we are feeling now!

BUT…….., to make you feel better, look at a photo of autumn leaves and flowers I picked last weekend in Evia!
You know, MY CHORIO(=my village)

Warm greetings to all of you.

Mythology in English

Dearest friends,

Our Mythology group this year will deal with the adventures of Ulysses (Odysseus) and our aim is to take our little friends to the theatre to watch one of the best plays for children that we have ever seen with the same theme, the Odyssey. Last year we took our Mythology Group to a theater play about the part of the Mythology that we had dealt with, and the children loved it because, even though it was in Greek, they could follow and they also loved Savopoulos’ music.

If you are interested, contact us to discuss the details. Our group usually meets on Sundays at 5.00, but we are flexible.

Amicalement, Jean Claude

They took care of us and made us to fall in love with Athens from the first sight. Their services are first class and they are very nice and warm-hearted people passionate about their country and job. We would highly recommend them to anyone be it short visitors or long stayers. a guided tour of The Μuseum of Greek Folk Art (En)

Dearest friends,
We are planning a guided tour (En) of The Μuseum of Greek Folk Art  (Central Building, 17 Kydathinaion Str., Plaka),
on Sunday the 8th of May at 11.00 in the morning.
We’ll give you all details later.
You don’t want to miss this tour, trust us. The reasons are that the museum is one of the best you can visit to get a clear picture of the Greek tradition and culture and the most important point is our guide, who is a specialist and extremely knowledgable in the field.
So don’t hesitate: contact us to get a group together. The cost will depend on the number of the participants – the more, the cheaper. The entrance fee will be probably halved (1 euro instead of 2) just for us !
to book, please contact us
see you there !!!
