European Heritage Days at the Old Athens Gasworks

free admission, projections, guided theme tours

The Industrial Gas Museum opened to the public in January 2013 and is the first industrial museum in Athens. It is located within the old Athens Gasworks (1857-1984), the first energy production plant in Greece and one of the few old Gasworks in Europe where almost all facilities and machinery have survived intact.

The Industrial Gas Museum, being one of the country’s latest monuments that recently became accessible to the public, participates in this European celebration of culture by offering free admission to all from the 27th to the 29th of September 2013.

In addition, in line with this year’s theme “The Faces of Time”, it is offering free guided theme tours in the old Gasworks, focusing on the persons that associated their life with the plant’s history. During those days, references to the entrepreneurs and the politicians, the inventors and the engineers, as well as to the gasworks workers and residents of the area will add a different color and feeling to the guided tours.

Finally, the Museum will offer during those days free projections of archive material on the people involved in the Gasworks, the production line and the working conditions. The projections will take place all day during the opening hours of the Museum (10.00-18.00) and will take place in the New Water Gas building.
