National Museum of Contemporary Art |

The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens presents from November 9th 2011 until January 8th 2012 the new work by internationally acclaimed Cuban artist Carlos Garaicoa titled Photo-topography. The work is presented in the framework of the series ΕΜSΤ Commissions 2011, with commissions by the Museum for its Project Room that are realized with the kind support of Bombay Sapphire gin.

In the installation that Carlos Garaicoa will realize and present for the first time at EMST, he uses photographs as documents for the creation of nine polyspan objects. The artist utilizes the idea of the ruins as a permanent element of his work, the fragility of the urban tissue and the impermanence of buildings in particularly complex social contexts, relating it to the urbanistic history of Athens. This work is also a metaphor of the photographic document to new materials, which has been one of the main focuses of his work in the last years.

Carlos Garaicoa was born in 1967 in Havana, Cuba. He has realized numerous international exhibitions and has participated in large artistic organizations among are Kwanju Biennale, Korea (1997), the Sao Paolo Biennale and Dokumenta XI in Kassel (2002). He lives and works in Madrid and Havana.
