The 39th Book Festival is a very important institution for the cultural life of the city of Athens which begins on the first days of September at the outdoor area of Zappeio and is organized by the Book Publishers Association, and is co-organized by the City of Athens Cultural Organization and the City of Athens historical archives section, while it is under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The opening ceremony for the Book Festival will take place on Sunday, 5 September 2010, at 8 o’clock in the evening and will be performed by the Mayor of Athens Mr. Nikitas Kaklamanis.

This year’s Book Festival is dedicated to the “Role of the Local Government in contemporary society and civilization”.

Participating are the Hellenic National Committee of UNICEF, the National Book Center and the Greek Parliament Foundation for the Parliamentary System and Democracy.

The program of the 39th Book Festival is rich and invites you to a variety of events, that have been organized by the Cultural Organization and the City of Athens historical archives section, the National Book Center and of course the Book Publishers Association.

Specifically, at the area where the Festival is happening, there will be an exhibition of anecdotal photographs with aspects of 1988 Athens, which have been taken from the collectors publication of the City of Athens Historic Archive “ATHINAI”, while the first official presentation of the album will take place, on Wednesday, 15 September, at 8 o’clock in the evening.

Also, on Saturday, 11 September 2010, at 8 o’clock in the evening, a discussion has been scheduled, on the subject: “Crime Fiction”, with speakers’ members of the Hellenic Association of Writers of Crime Fiction (Ε.Λ.Σ.Α.Λ.), Titina Danelli, Tefkros Mihailidis, Demetris Mamaloukas and Giannis Ragos. Discussion coordinator is the journalist Manolis Piblis, also member of the Association.

Lastly, in the framework of the 39th Book Festival, the National Book Center organizes a series of events with the theme “Fairytales of the world” for our little visitors. On Saturday 4, on Sunday 12 and on Sunday 19 September, 7-8 in the afternoon, children will have the chance to hear fairytales that have been passed down to each generation due to the tradition of oral repetition and literature from all over the world. Fairytales about strange creatures, about animals that speak in a human voice, stories about dreams and desires, for the young and old, that have survived until today because of oral transmission or were written by Greek or foreign writers. The events will take place at the same area as the Exhibition and are open to the public.

Communication sponsors are ERT and the radio stations NET 105,8 and KOSMOS 93,3, the newspaper ELEFTHEROTYPIA and the magazine “VIVLIOTHIKI”, as well as the radio station 9.84.

The artistic care of this important event is undertaken by the painter VENTSESLAV IOTOV, who created a piece of art that refers to the timeless need to read books, so that modern man has the spiritual elevation, necessary element for living a “virtuous life”, at difficult times.

At the 39th Book Festival, that takes place at the outdoor area of Zappeio (03-19 September 2010), about 160 publishers in 130 stands present the contemporary publishing production with more than 50.000 book titles.
