rare ability to transform any lyric into something compelling and utterly personal; and not just on her own songs, for
she has become a master of the art of finding herself in the words and music of others…

…Displaying a sadness tempered by optimism, and a despair rescued by humour Marianne returned, finally clean
with a collection of classic pop, blues and art songs on the critically lauded STRANGE WEATHER (1987). A live retrospective followed on BLAZING AWAY (CD&VHS 1990), which ably displayed why Faithfull has become one of the
most sought after concert artists of the last 30 years.

Cape Verdean singer Cesaria Evora will perform at Lycabettus Theater
6/6/11

Cesaria Evora began her career as a singer in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente more than forty-five years ago. Aged just twenty, she was already singing of romantic disappointments and the remoteness of the Cape Verde islands, expressing a remarkable melancholy that is illustrated by recordings made at the time, reissued at the end of 2008 on “Radio Mindelo”. Entrenched in a saudade of universal appeal or settling quietly over her windswept islands, this Atlantic melancholy remains Cesaria Evora’s trademark.

Whether she sings coladeras (catchy songs perfect for the dance floor) or mornas (Cape-Verdean blues), her voice holds an inescapable fascination for the listener. Three years after “Rogamar”, the Cape-Verdean singer is back with “Nha Sentimento”, an album that combines gravity and lightness of tone.

She discovered that although rock gave her a certain artistic freedom, and brought her to explore a lower range of her voice, it was still not enough for her appetite for self-expression, she decided to create her own style with the help of great musicians. She study harmony and piano in Paris, and then met with the vocal-coach she still working with – named Yaël Benzaquen – a very precious and clever “maître de chant” whom Emma always consult, especially when she explore some new vocal possibilities and directions.

This own style became a combination of diverse opera influences, lyrical poetry and modern trance and rock/pop influences…

…Emma has performed many times, in some of the most amazing places around the world, including the Acropolis in Athens, the arena “Olympia” in Greece too, the Kremlin Grand Palace in Moscow, the Esplanade Opera House in Singapore, the Cesarea Arena in Israel, the theatre Carré in Holland, in a newly excavated open air Roman Mausoleum near Belgrade for 10 000 people, and an open air concert on the site of an immense temple in Bali, and by the Tunisian shore, also in Monaco for the Prince Albert for the ice skating, and at Hammamet, to name but a few…

Like other eager beaver politicians-in-training, he went to every political fundraiser under the sun … but was dismayed to find the music at these events underwhelming, lackluster, loud and un-neighborly. Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world – crossing genres of classical, jazz and old-fashioned pop – and hoping to appeal to conservatives and liberals alike, he founded the “little orchestra”Pink Martini in 1994 to provide more beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers for progressive causes such as civil rights, affordable housing, the environment, libraries, public broadcasting, education and parks.

“Pink Martini draws inspiration from the romantic Hollywood musicals of the 1940s or ‘50s … with a more global perspective. We write a lot of songs … but we also champion songs like Ernesto Lecuona’s “Andalucia”or “Amado mio”from the Rita Hayworth film “Gilda”or “Kikuchiyo to mohshimasu (My name is Kikuchiyo)”made famous in the 1960s by the great Japanese group Hiroshi Wada & His Mahina Stars. In that sense we’re a bit like musical archeologists, digging through recordings and scores of years past and rediscovering beautiful songs.”

In 2000 Gotan Project, the trio founded by Philippe Cohen Solal, Eduardo Makaroff and Christoph H. Müller released their debut album «La revancha del tango”. With this record Gotan Project delivered the sweetest revenge for Tango, bringing the sexy music and the sound of Argentina to the world. Now the sound of Gotan Project is synonymous with cool and chic from the clubs of New York to the beaches of Rio de Janeiro.
With their second album “Lunático” (2006) Gotan Project breathed more live recording and jazz influence into their sound. Much imitated, Gotan Project has learned to appreciate the compliment and after 2 million sales and 400 concerts, they are back with their 3rd studio album the magnificent “Tango 3.0”.
“La revancha del tango” made it into The Guardian top 100 albums of the decade and now Tango 3.0 will lead the way into a new decade with its cinematic vision and its invocation of not only Buenos Aires but also the Mississippi delta blues from New Orleans to Nashville to the back streets of New York. “Tango 3.0” is Gotan Project’s new world order – get on board!
