Young people take action in bringing a sign of hope and participation to the City. The festive program that the City of Athens has prepared this year, concentrates on solidarity and joint efforts. For this reason, the artistic workforce of the City is giving an emphasis on giving life to the commercial center of Athens, which has lately been hit from the financial crisis, with lots of shops shutting down.

The municipality of Athens, and its workforce, is making all necessary efforts to adjust to the new everyday life difficult circumstances. In contrast with what was going on in the past, Christmas holidays is now the city’s affair.

All its artistic forces are in action, offering their time and energy, joined by all organizations affiliated to the Municipality of Athens, trying to give to all a message of celebration and happiness, but of optimism and new meaning as well, that of solidarity, of collectiveness and of participation…

…The festivals, each one with a different theme, will give the vibe of the holiday season for 30 days and nights in the main squares of the city: Syntagma, Klauthmonos and Kotzia square while at the same time they will be expanded to 17 neighborhoods of the city. More than 700 artists will assist this effort, musicians, music groups, singers, dancers, representatives of fine arts, actors, jogglers….

3rd Athens Biennale 2011
23 October – 11 December

The 3rd Athens Biennale 2011 MONODROME is considered the final part of a trilogy which started with DESTROY ATHENS 2007 and continued with HEAVEN 2009. Drawing upon the life and work of Walter Benjamin and inspired by his book by the same title (One way Street, 1928), MONODROME is curated by Nicolas Bourriaud and X&Y (Xenia Kalpaktsoglou and Poka-Yio, co-founders of the Athens Biennale). It is a narrative broadcasting from historical venues in the centre of Athens and articulating an imaginary dialogue between The Little Prince and Walter Benjamin. As the intellectual retreats defeated in the face of the escalated distress, the Little Prince keeps questioning this condition with the disarming innocence and the plainspoken boldness of a child.

MONODROME is being realized despite the Crisis that affects Greece heavily. Produced in a state of emergency, and through the synergy of all participants and a large group of volunteers, MONODROME assembles the diverse pieces of an exploratory puzzle, addressing the “here and now”. At the same time the exhibition attempts to question historical narratives that have functioned as dictums of the Greek sociopolitical and aesthetic identity and resulted in the country’s perennial suspension between a ‘before’ (tradition) and an ‘after’ (modernization). Being usually perceived and promoted as an emblematic city, Athens today is the epicentre of the Greek upheaval, a place of massive demonstrations and public discussions…

…

The 3rd Athens Biennale 2011 MONODROME is a collective discourse of artists, art groups, curators and theorists, reflecting on the complex relations between the global and the local, in an attempt to explore new modes of cultural action that open up dialogue and debate, comment on cultural production and revisit relations between (art) histories and subjectivities. It consists of three intertwined modes: the MONODROME exhibition & projects, the MONODROME Debate, the MONODROME online Channel. Furthermore, a series of exhibitions and events organized by cultural institutions, museums and galleries in Athens are included in MONODROME Parallel Events.

The MONODROME Debate is an ongoing body of lectures, interviews, discussions and performative presentations that will take place at the auditorium of Diplareios School. Participants include: Charles Esche, Anna Dezeuze, Kostis Stafylakis & Thanos Lipovats, Antonis Liakos, Effie Gazi, Dimitra Labropoulou, Alexis Fragiadakis, Manuel Ramos, Makis Malafekas and others.

The MONODROME Channel is an online platform that will be transmitting two parallel projects: The ongoing documentation of the MONODROME exhibitions and time based events (performances, lectures, workshops etc) and the MONODROME Debate programme.

“The Tragic Myths Today”

The City of Athens Cultural Organization in collaboration with Attica Region organizes the Ancient Drama Festival by the title of “The Tragic Myths Today” running from August 25 to September 18, 2011 in Athens, Greece.

The Ancient Drama Festival aspires to connect the tragic myths with the big questions that arise today regarding violence, fear, institutions and democracy, and thus to help us contemplate further on these contemporary issues. At the same time, it wishes to advance classical dialectic thought and to demonstrate the fortitude and strength of man. Therefore today, at the heart of the current crisis, which is not only economic but also spiritual, as well as a crisis of ethical values, we are creating an educational and cultural diversion

We’re delighted to present an exhibition entitled ARRRGH! Monsters in Fashion, organised by the cultural organisation ATOPOS Contemporary Visual Culture (ATOPOS CVC) at the Benaki Museum.

The exhibition, curated by Vasilis Zinadiakis and ATOPOS (CVC), explores the growing influence of contemporary character design on fashion. Emerging and established fashion designers are redefining the relationship between the body and clothing and between the potential of the human body and our perception of ‘What is Monster?’, combining new visual and dress codes of communication.

The designers and artists experiment, give shape to fabrics and clothe the human body creating hybrid creatures with supernatural forms, vibrant colours and abstract features that take you by surprise. These experimental creations set the scene for a unique and imaginary environment providing renewed views of fashion and redefining our perceptions of visual culture.

ATOPOS CVC will present creations by established as well as upcoming designers and artists such as: Alex Mattsson, Ara Jo, Bronwen Marshall, Cassette Playa aka Carri Mundane, Gary Card, Craig Green, Holly Fox Lee, Dr NOKI’s NHS, Dharma Taylor, Luis Lopez Smith, Piers Atkinson, Alexis Themistocleous, Walter Van Beirendonck, Bart Hess, Jean-Charles De Castelbajac and Issey Miyake among others.

In parallel with the exhibition, we are organising a series of workshops led by UK-based artists Caroline Evans and Dharma Taylor.

The exhibition and workshops are being organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the City of Athens, the Ambassade de France en Grèce, and the Embassy of the United States, Athens, as part of the Athens Festival 2011, with the support of the Institut Français d’Athènes, the British Council and the Athens Every Week
