INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY 2013: Industrial Gas Museum
“Technopolis” City of Athens

The Industrial Gas Museum participates, for the 2nd consecutive year, in the celebrations for the International Museum Day, by organizing a series of events/activities for children and adults from 10.00 – 21.00 on Sunday May 12, 2013. Various events will take place in “Technopolis” City of Athens around ICOM’s theme for this year’s celebration – Μuseums (Memory + Creativity) = Social Change

On Sunday May 12, admission to the Industrial Gas Museum, as well as all activities, will be free.  Furthermore, the MuseumShop will offer selected items at a 10% discount.

The Industrial Gas Museum invites its guests to follow its Museum Path and explore the gas production line, tour the facilities of the old Gasworks, associate old technology with the modern history of Athens and be familiarized with exciting issues concerning lighting gas and the gasworks.

The New Watergas* (Tower) will open its doors to the public for the first time.  Visitors will have access to its highest level and therefore enjoy the great view of the gasworks and the city at sunset.  There will be two guided tours to the roof deck of the Tower, one at 10:00 and one at 19:00.  The New Watergas building was erected in 1955 and has been declared a listed building.  It is a 30 meter high structure with 5 levels and its entire mechanical equipment remains intact. On the ground level there is a projection room, an area for educational programs and the Museum Shop that are accessible year round.
On International Museum Day (May 12) the Museum will offer:
Free guided tours – tours start at 10.00 and will rerun every 1,5 hours
Educational programs:

  • «The Children explore the Museum in Gaziι» at 11.00 for children aged 8-12 years
  • «The Mystery of Gas Lighting», at 12.00 for children aged 5 -7 years

Reservations are required for the educational programs due to the limited number of places available.
* The number of visitors per group that will take the guided tour in the tallest building of the Museum, the New Watergas Tower, cannot exceed 15 persons.  Persons who suffer from heart conditions, acrophobia or pregnant women cannot participate in the tour.
