Do you know how Lecabettus Hill was made?

How a 1870 building can host modern art.

Old Greek ads and posters.

Spice and herbs kingdom

A touch of red!

Dried pepper kingdom

A small chapel with fantastic icons.

Reaching the Central Market.

The fishmonger of our hearts is recommending fish that…

“Barba-Mitsos” grilled for us.

“No diet” day!

Walking Tour In Athens

***

Although I have lived in Athens for nearly 4 months now, I know that I have barely scratched the surface in terms of what there is to see and do. Certainly, my current series on museums in Athens is helping me to see one side of it, but finding the time to work, blog, and get out and about more is a difficult balancing act. Except when you can go on a tour with the Travel Bloggers Greece group though – then you get to do it all at once, with huge doses of pleasure as well!
The walking tour in Athens was organised by Katerina and Aristotelis of Livin Lovin, who cater to a predominantly ex-pat clientele. Starting off at the Acropolis metro, we strolled through some side streets, stopping off at a few interesting places, until we got to our ‘surprise’…

We are born and raised Athenians. We thought we knew everything about Athens.
WRONG!

Then came Aristotelis and a treasure of knowledge emerged from his magic box!

And we learnt things that were so interesting and new to us, as well, that we couldn’t believe it.

*

 *

We Had to stop after the first hour due to heavy rain and go for coffee inside beautiful Stoa Spiromiliou, a break that was welcome by all, since we had the chance to sit and chat.

 *

 *

Then we continued  at the excavations of the Metro at Syntagma, the monument of the

Unknown Soldier,

through the National Garden- beautiful after the rain-,

at the Presindential Mansion, Panathenaic Stadium, Zappeion Megaron,

and ended the tour at Hadrian’s Arch.

We loved it, and so did everyone else.
Take a look at the photos to get an idea and we hope to see you at our next one.

“Passage into History” Nemea Tour with Professor S. Miller.

“Passage into History” Nemea tour.

***

On Saturday 17/10 we had the privilege of sharing the dream of this man with him.
Professor Miller, the archaeologist who has dedicated his whole life on the excavation first and the revival of the Games then, met us at the Museum and gave us a long tour of the museum, the site, and then told us stories about his early days there. We also saw the trailer of the film that has been made by Yiannis Lapatas about the previous games in 2012.

We didn’t want him to stop talking, but eventually he did. It’s always an experience to become part of such an exceptional person’s dream !
As always, after that we went eating at a small taverna in a village nearby, where the food was great, the company was great, the wine was great, – we didn’t visit a winery this time, but we are already working on it, we promise !

Now guess what our next plan is ! We will organise our support and participation in the Nemean Games of June 2016, so stay tuned.

Heading to OUR “Passage into History”

After a quick stop at the Corinth Canal for a coffee and some photos…

“MEET THE FISH”

“MEET THE FISH”
at the Central Market of Rendis

***

We love fish, we eat fish, BUT we did not know much about Greek fish, their names, methods of cooking, which one is the king of all, which ones have the most Ω3, and a lot more.

This is part of our “Meet the Greek products” visits which we’ve organized for the English speaking community “Newcomers in Athens”, as well as for the French community Athènes Accueil“. The photos are from both visits.

***

Thanassis, the fish monger, in fluent English explained everything, answered all our questions, and showed us the fish “live”

Another thing that people loved was the rest of the shops in the market, like the amazing butcher shop, the fruit and vegetable shop, the cheese shop, and all the others.

We stayed there a lot longer than we had expected, just to look around and do our weekly provisions.

Then, as always, we went to the one and only taverna in the market for a lunch with….fish, of course!

So, now we know!

FAMILY VISIT AT THE ACROPOLIS MUSEUM.

We enjoyed another one of Elli’s guided tours at the Acropolis Museum with a large group aged from 4 to …. While the parents were attending the tour, we (Yannis, Aris and Katerina), doing the family activities of the museum with the little ones.

A guided tour at to Ancient Agora, Stoa Attalou, and Thission

The guided tour at the Ancient Agora was one of the most interesting and successful tours. It was a very hot day, in spite of the weather forecast, that had announced clouds, so Elli tried to do all the tour in the shade under the trees. Through her stories, we could actually picture a typical day of an Athinian. She was amazing as usual !

After the tour, some of us went to the food festival at Technopolis Gazi, where he had the chance to taste flavors from all over Greece. Many thanks to Athinorama for their special OFFER of 2 for 1 tickets, as well as the FREE invitations they offered to our group so generously.

“MUST SEE PLAKA” TOUR

We knew Plaka – no, we THOUGHT we knew Plaka!

Or better, we knew A LOT about Plaka, but not all…

***

… and then, along came Aristotelis, to disclose secrets spots that we had not been aware of, like the house with the glass floor and the ruins underneath, the importance of the Tower of the Winds in the everyday life of the Athenians, the house with the statue at its facade, and a lot more…

***

The Mascot of our Tour !!!

We began our Tour where the previous one (“Must See Athens”) had finished, at Hadrian’s Arch.

Strolling around Plaka

A “Polikatikia” with … a glass floor !

The bell of independence

Temple of The Winds

Hadrian’s Library

It was a tour that we all enjoyed very much and it was followed (as always), by lunch at a picturesque beer spot in Psyrri, where we will be hosting a beer tasting event in the near future.

“We had a very interested follower last weekend on the “Must See Plaka” tour in Athens. He walked with us, he stopped were we stopped, and he seemed to understand most of the history we were told by our great guide Aristoteles”.
