The Kalamata International Dance Festival is the key event in the year of the city's International Dance Centre.

The Kalamata International Dance Festival is the key event in the year of the city’s International Dance Centre. The Centre was founded in the spring of 1995, charged with supporting and promoting the art of dance via research, education, and artistic activities and creativity.

After seventeen years as an active presence in the Greek dance scene, thanks to the support of the local authorities the Kalamata Festival has earned itself a special place on the festival map of the Mediterranean South, and built bridges to international dance creativity.

A number of influential figures, whose work is shaping the history of contemporary dance made their first Greek appearance at Kalamata, while the Festival has also taken care to promote and support Greek creativity in the field by commissioning works from talented Greek choreographers and supporting new companies in their experimental explorations.

Another integral part of the Festival are the seminars and talks aimed at dance students and professions alike, while other parallel events include publications and video dance productions.

From the very start, the Festival was programmed with two considerations in mind: the wide range of trends in contemporary dance and the ever-larger audiences this art-form attracts. Today, sixteen years down the line, every year sees a widely-varied audience enthusiastically respond to the call of the Festival.

Kalamata, the city of dance, is set to host its 17th annual programme of events between the 14th and 21st of July 2011.

The Festival is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Municipality of Kalamata.

ATHENS VIDEO ART FESTIVAL 2011 | 20 – 22 MAY
«TECHNOPOLIS» MUNICIPALITY OF ATHENS | PEIRAIOS 100, GKAZI

FOR TOMORROW REMEMBER FOR IT IS THE BEGINNING OF ALWAYS!

The international festival of digital arts and new media of Greece, Athens Video Art Festival, continuing its journey through the world of contemporary arts and new technologies returns for its seventh edition.

Supporting its basic principles and with the heritage of its seven years long history, Athens Video Art Festival represents our country internationally by presenting year by year cultural activities from worldwide in the most integral way with the aim of familiarizing the Greek public with new media in the context of a general effort to unite the diverse dots of the artistic map. In the context of its program, we had the pleasure to present a series of tributes to some of the most important figures, such as Nam June Paik, Bill Viola, Bill Vorn and Andy Warhol in collaboration with either local or international organizations. Artists from around the world have the opportunity to present their artworks through the annual call for entries for the seven categories of its program (Video Art – Video Installations – Installation Art – Animation – Digital Image – Performance Art – Web Art), composing a platform of dialogue among the diverse aspect of digital culture.

Following the famous Nam June Paik’s quote «The future is now», the upcoming edition of Athens Video Art Festival suggests the continuous redesignation of thesis, aims and principles of everyday life inviting both artists and the public to coexist as colleagues in a journey to the future.

In the context of the program of its forthcoming edition, Athens Video Art Festival is scheduled to host artworks for the seven official categories, whereas attendants will have the opportunity to get familiar with eleven of the most outstanding festivals of digital arts from six European countries, as well as to view a special tribute to one of the most influential cultural movements, FLUXUS, entitled «Fluxus is an attitude».

Supporting the role and the character of Athens Video Art Festival, as well as appreciating modern artists’ artistry, this year’s program is enriched by a special category under the title «Believe the hype». The showrooms will host artworks created by artists that outstood during the past one year, in the framework of an exhibition curated by the Athens Video Art Festival Production Team.

Last but not least, with the aim of maintaining the interaction between the several elements of art and influenced by the phrase «Music is the healing force of the universe», Athens Video Art Festival 2011 adds to its program a special music line up inaugurating for the very first time in its history a second, inner stage.

The exhibition Intake features two installations from the material from two art projects Please Me and Fall in Love with the Log that were developed in the United States from 2007 to 2009.

The exhibition Intake features two installations from the material from two art projects Please Me and Fall in Love with the Log that were developed in the United States from 2007 to 2009. The first installation offers the visitor the experience of being in a hurricane: in a hermetically sealed room, air turbines mimic the phenomenon of a whirlwind. The second installation allows us to “reckon” with a natural-size “Jumbo” (Boeing 747-200) engine.

At the same time, the artist uses video, still images, and audio to document the steps involved in creating the work and conveys with particular clarity the organizing principles with which the material was incrementally transformed.

Theodoros Zafeiropoulos graduated with honors from the School of Fine Arts at the Aristoteleian University of Thessaloniki and from the Master of Fine Arts program of the School of Fine Arts in Athens. He was awarded the Paula Rhodes Memorial Award from the School of Visual Arts in New York, from which he earned a Masters in Fine Arts. He is also a recipient of the Fulbright Foundation scholarship and other scholarships. He was a fellow at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, USA. The artist has participated in various group exhibitions. Intake is his third solo exhibition. He lives and works in Athens and New York City.

Art historian Sotirios Bahtsetzis curates the exhibition.
