The series of exhibitions in cooperation with the Photography Circle continues with the photo exhibition of Loukas Vasilikos and Christina Sorovou…

Each exhibition in series Photographic Pairs features the work of two photographers, both members of the Photography Circle, whose paths in life or photography cross. The new photographic pair are Lukas Vasilikosand Christina Sorovou, whose friendship emerged from their shared passion for the art of photography. Sorovou’s black and white photographs are of friends and family while Vasilikos’ color photographs mainly depict street scenes. The pairing of these photographers is justified not only in light of the friendship they share but also because of similarities in the way they have developed as photographers. That said, their work as photographers bears the marks of their distinct personalities.
Platon Rivellis, photo critic and founder of the Photography Circle, is curator of this exhibition series

Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) was born in Connecticut, USA and majored in art at Syracuse University (New York, USA). After serving in the US army during the Korean War, he moved to New York where he studied at the School of Visual Arts and worked at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), both in the bookshop and as a night receptionist. He became known in the late 1960s for his wall drawings and his sculptures or “structures” as he called them, but he also created a large number of works in other media, such as drawing, painting, printing, and photography. At first his work was associated with Minimalism, but was later related so closely to Conceptual art that he is considered by many to be the father of this movement. In 1967, he wrote “Paragraphs on Conceptual Art,” in which he states that the idea, or concept, of a work is of greater importance that the physical form through which the artist conveys his idea. It is also believed that Sol LeWitt was the first to mention the term Conceptual art when he wrote:“I will refer to the kind of art I create as conceptual art.”Sol LeWitt’s work was the subject of a great number of exhibitions, both during his lifetime and after his death.
Just as a musical composer creates a composition, which the musician then interprets in his own personal style, Sol LeWitt wrote detailed instructions for the creation of his wall drawings, which were then executed by others: the importance was in the idea.

The cube held an important place in the early work of the artist, but beginning in 1980 he also started using the triangle and the circle. Through the use of isometric projection his two-dimensional works gave the impression of three-dimensional forms.

When he died, the New York Times described LeWitt as “…a patron and friend of artists, both old and young… the opposite of the artist as celebrity”. Whoever knew him personally will never forget his generosity.

The Herakleidon Museum, in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in Athens, present an exhibition of works by the sculptor Ntina Anastasiadou titled “Mathematics and the Arts of Japan”.

The exhibition comprises 60 sculptures, ceramic works and constructions inspired by the Culture of Japan.

From 1980 to 1986 Ntina Anastasiadou studied sculpture, theory of art and bronze casting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (University of Athens), from where she graduated with distinction (10/10). She was a student of George Nikolaidis and Theodoros Papagiannis. In 1986 the Faculty Board of her department chose her to participate with some of her works in an international art festival in Ushimado, Okayama, Japan. She stayed there for a year and attended Japanese language lessons, calligraphy and sumi painting (sumi-e) under the historian and calligrapher Mitsuo Takaoki, and his wife Miki Takaoki, a painter. From 1988 to 1991, having been awarded a scholarship by the Japanese Ministry of Education (Monbusho), she attended courses in Japanese Art History (Japanese Buddhist Art) at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Kyoto University, under Professor Zenzo Shimizu. She believes that her relationship with the family of her teacher, Mitsuo Takaoki, dating from 1980 till today, has played a decisive role in her artistic course. In 1999 she was awarded for her work by the Greek Literary Association.

She has held eight (8) solo exhibitions in Greece and two (2) in Japan, and has taken part in several group exhibitions. In 2009 she exhibited her works at the Embassy of Japan on the occasion of the celebration of the 110th anniversary of Greek-Japanese friendship (Greece-Japan: 110 years of friendly ties). Some of her works are displayed at the Embassy of Japan in Athens, as well as in private and public collections in Japan, Greece, the United Arab Emirates and the U.S.A. She has given many lectures in Greece to promote the Japanese culture.

Dimitris Skalkotos, accomplished marble sculptor from the island of Tinos, creates a poem through space
19 JANUARY – 25 FEBRUARY 2012

Dimitris Skalkotos, accomplished marble sculptor from the island of Tinos, creates a poem through space, displaying a string of evocative words carved in marble throughout the lower floor of the gallery. The concepts of ‘FOS’ (Light), ‘AIONIO’ (Eternal), ‘MNIMI’ (Memory), ‘GYNAIKA’ (Woman), ‘ORIO’ (Limit), ‘PIGI’ (Source), ‘MONOS’ (Alone), ‘ICHOS’ (Sound), EFYGE (Departed), ‘SYNOCHI’ (Consistency), ‘DYSI’ (Sunset) have been selected from a set of poems by psychiatrist Grigoris Maniadakis titled ‘Fotagogos’. Together, the words as a sequence form a story whereas their individual shapes stress the deeper meaning of each one of them. The marble interpretations are placed on wooden makeshift pedestals as if the visitor were to walk into the studio of the artist during the hours of labour.

On the ground floor, the central piece is installed, the ‘fotagogos’ around which the exhibition turns, a larger grey marble sculpture with a hollow inside dressed with mirrors that reflect a thousand corners.

An exhibition featuring over one hundred photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989), the photographer who epitomized the American avant-garde—or, more accurately, perhaps, the New York underground arts scene of the ’70s and ’80s.

The Onassis Cultural Centre – Athens proudly presents the first solo exhibition in Greece of iconic American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. In collaboration with the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation in New York, the exhibition brings together more than a hundred of Mapplethorpe’s works, all representing the artist’s unique aesthetics. Mapplethorpe is considered to be one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and a milestone of the American avant-garde scene. His legend grew bigger when his eccentric lifestyle and provocative, autobiographical to a large extent, art were brutally stopped by his untimely death at the late 80s. His work has been since become the subject of extended study while the directness and honesty in his approach to life and art continue to attract large interest worldwide.
