Athens Photo Festival is the leading international festival of photography in Southeastern Europe. Exploring critical issues relevant to our times, our programme works within an international, national and local context, encompassing a variety of exhibitions and activities designed to reflect the diversity of contemporary photography, and to create opportunities for exchange of ideas, artistic expression and international engagement.

The 2016 main exhibitions will take place from 9 June until 31 July 2016, at the Benaki Museum, presenting a wide spectrum of works of both emerging and established artists from all over the world. At the core of the festival is a range of events, including international portfolio reviews, screenings, talks and discussions, workshops, and participatory projects. In addition to the main venue-based programme, the festival encourages local community involvement through satellite exhibitions in various locations in the city.

Our curatorial team aims to develop a programme of exhibitions for 2016, creating a dialogue between different thematic ideas in relation to this year’s theme, under the title [mis/dis]placed. The exhibition programme will be developed further in relation to the works submitted through the open submission process.

Every year the Hellenic Centre for Photography announces an open call that is exclusively dedicated towards the photographic work of young artists under 35 years old. This edition’s call received over 800 submissions from young artists from Greece and abroad, from which 13 were selected as 2015 Young Greek Photographers.

As part of the Athens Photo Festival’s 2016 educational programme, the internationally acclaimed photographer, Simon Norfolk, will lead a four-day intensive, practice oriented photography workshop, offering to a limited number of participants the opportunity to absorb the experience he has amassed over his long and distinguished career. The workshop will be held at the Benaki Museum from Friday 10 to Monday 13 June, 2016.

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to participate in an comprehensive program, involving shooting sessions, technical instruction, group critiques, daily reviews and monitoring/guidance. Norfolk will approach this class as if it is an assignment. Pre-planning and pre-shooting themes will be also discussed.

“I’d like to go out looking for some light. This is what I do when I’m working, so I think it might be useful for intermediates and advanced level photographers to come with me and see it in practice. As a
landscape photographer, the light itself is the most important part of the story telling. Finding light is what I spend most of my time on when I’m in the field. For photographers, learning to think about light divides three ways: you need to see the need for it, know how to find it, and know how to capture it”.
(Simon Norfolk)

This workshop involves working four days alongside Simon, beginning with classroom sessions in the daytime, then a photography shoot in the evening light (until approximately midnight) and then back out again for a bright and fresh 5am start for the dawn light. Participants are expected to attend all sessions of the workshop.
