AEGINA FISTIKI FEST ’14

ABOUT THE AEGINA FISTIKI FESTIVAL

The Aegina Fistiki Fest was the dream of a group of people who believed that the pistachio tree, the nut and its farmers, could and should, get the recognition they deserve for their contribution to Aegina’s development. That dream was taken on board by a large group of volunteers who worked to make the pistachio festival a reality.

The trade fair

The central focus of the Pistachio Festival, the trade fair hosts more than 40 booths, allowing the visitors to learn not just about the pistachio, but other traditional products such as ceramics, folk art and handmade jewellery.

Opening Ceremony

With “Sweet Pistachio” we will welcome you to this year’s festival. It is a theatrical presentation which will take you back in time to the 1960s, creating a vintage atmosphere along with the orchestra of traditional instruments and local dance groups.

Gastronomy

This year we aim to make backlavas with 100 sheets of filo and of course Aegina pistachios. We will be guided by the Athens Club of Masterchefs and the executive pastry chef Mr Tassos Protopsaltis. We will continue with the combination of our famous product with locally-produced honey!

Childrens entertainment

Stories, treasure hunts, and educational programmes through theatrical games are some of the activities we have planned for our young friends. Based at the courtyard area of the Markellos Tower we will . ‘fly’ as far as Perdika, passing through the island’s main harbour. Playing the whole while!

Cultural events

Aegina, with its rich traditions and history has always been renowned for the way it attracts artists of all kinds. Moralis, Kapralos, Nikolaou, Kazantzakis, Vassileou as well as Xaharkos, Varotsos, Galani, Arvanitaki are some of the names which have been associated – and continue to be connected with – the magic of this island.
This year’s programme includes guided tours, talks, ceramic, model boat and photographic exhibitions, painting workshops, demonstrations of lace-making and of course musical evenings for all tastes.

LIFE Agrostrat

LIFE Agrostrat takes part again this year in the Pistachio Festival, organising two important events, a conference on the results to date of (20th September), and a demonstration of compost-making out of the waste-products from pistachio processing (21 September)
